What is a Doula!

You have found my page so you are well on your way to find a doula. There are numerous doula services definitions. The actual definition of the word "Doula" is from the ancient Greek Word Meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous non-medical physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before birth, during labor and delivery and after birth. I provide these services as a DONA certified Doula in Rapid City and the Black Hills area.

(A Doula is not a midwife and never performs the services of a midwife)

Doulas "mother the mother." While performing her role, a doula:

  • Provides emotional support
  • Doulas offers suggestions during pregnancy for relief of pregnancy related discomforts.
  • Doula support starts at the first visit and prenatal support throughout  labor and delivery and postpartum support
  • Doulas offer Breastfeeding support because well established breastfeeding is vital to successful breastfeeding .
  • Doulas encourage the mothers partner to participate in labor at his own comfort level.
  • Doulas provide physical (non-medical), emotional and informational support to women and their partners
  • Doulas are educated and experienced in childbirth and the postpartum period.
  • Doulas offer suggestions for positioning changes and comfort measures that make mothers and their families feel nurtured and cared for.
  • Continuously reassures and comforts the mother (the key word is continuous - a doula never leaves the mother's side)
  • Looks after your partner as well (gives them bathroom and food breaks!)
